Supervillain Expectations

When we imagine the hurdles or obstacles that get in the way of our dreams and aspirations, we usually think something is actively preventing us from being able to achieve them. Think Lex Luthor with Kryptonite in hand standing in the way of Superman saving the world.

More often than not, what is actually preventing us from achieving our goals and dreams is the one person we would least expect would be getting in our way, Ourselves.

There are several ways we sabotage ourselves from accomplishing what we set out to do, but nothing is more nefarious than our Expectations.

Why is it so hard to get started when you want to lose those pesky 20 pounds or learn to play the guitar?

Even though we aspire to improve, we end up never getting started because the expectations we set upon ourselves to get there are just too high and not based in reality.

For example, if we want to lose weight, we’ll commit ourselves to running an hour a day. That’s a huge commitment for a couch potato to make! Instead of getting started, we’ll find every excuse in the book to put it off, and in the end, we never get moving because the expectation we set for ourselves was so high that the hurdle became too daunting for us to even begin.

The key here is not that we had expectations, it is that we set ourselves up for failure by not managing our expectations and committing ourselves to a more attainable goal. Now, put down that kryptonite and go save the world…or maybe just your hometown – you’ve got to manage those expectations!
